How can automotive machining balance quality, efficiency, and cost? Aoshiji® Custom Tool’s PCD tools deliver precision and durability, offering a high-efficiency, cost-effective solution.
Automotive PCD reamer solutions help manufacturers balance quality, efficiency, and cost in high-volume automotive machining.
01 Introduction – Why Automotive Machining Requires Better Tools
With the rapid advancement of technology and the economy, living standards are continuously improving, and automobiles have become an indispensable means of daily transportation. As the automotive industry grows, manufacturers are placing increasingly higher demands on component quality.
This raises a critical challenge for automotive component producers: how to enhance machining efficiency and effectively reduce costs, while maintaining uncompromising product quality.Aoshiji® Custom Tool’s automotive PCD reamer provides stable, high-precision machining for critical automotive valve components.
02 Automotive A/C Expansion Valve – Machining Challenges
Automotive air conditioning systems originated in the 1920s and have developed for nearly a century, becoming a standard feature in modern vehicles.
Among them, the automotive air conditioning expansion valve is a critical component of the cooling system. The valve body typically contains four holes (A, B, C, and D), which were traditionally machined using carbide tools. However, as market competition intensifies, the limitations of carbide tools have become evident — poor hole surface finish and limited tool life, making it difficult to meet the growing demand for high-quality machining.
In response to these challenges, our R&D team has developed a specially optimized PCD tool that achieves a hole wall surface finish of Ra0.2 when machining the four holes of an automotive air conditioning expansion valve, while doubling the tool life.
Aoshiji® Custom Tool has established long-term partnerships with leading automotive OEMs and component suppliers, delivering high-quality, high-efficiency, and high-precision custom PCD tooling solutions to meet the industry’s most demanding requirements.
03 Automotive PCD Reamer Solution for Bore Finishing
04 Case Study – Automotive PCD Reamer Performance
Workpiece: Automotive air conditioning expansion valve
Material: 6061 T6 aluminum alloy
Machine: Vertical machining center
Cooling method: External coolant
Machining area: Four holes (A, B, C, D) on the valve body
Customer’s current tool: Carbide reamer, hole wall surface roughness Ra1.6–3.2, tool life approx. 60,000 holes
Customer requirements: Hole surface roughness must be significantly improved to Ra ≤0.4; tool life should not be lower than the existing tool; a slight increase in tool cost is acceptable
05 Bore Roughness and Tool Life Comparison
| Comparison | Parameters | Tool Life | Hole Wall Roughness | Unit Tool Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company A Carbide Tool | S1300 F300 | 60,000 pcs | Ra 1.6 – 3.2 | 0.02 RMB/pc |
| Aoshiji® Custom Tool PCD Tool | S1500 F320 | 120,000 pcs | Ra 0.2 | 0.025 RMB/pc |
| Conclusion | Efficiency Slightly Improved | Tool Life ↑ 2× | Surface Finish Exceeded Customer Expectations | Cost ↑ 0.005 RMB/pc |
The data is based on machining Hole B on the valve body, with similar results observed for the other holes.
Based on customer machining trials, the Aoshiji® Custom Tool PCD cutting tools exceeded expectations on the customer’s most critical requirement — surface roughness — consistently achieving a stable Ra0.2. Tool life increased by more than 2 times on average, while tool cost rose only marginally. The outstanding performance of this PCD tool solution has been highly recognized and strongly endorsed by the customer. The automotive PCD reamer ensures exceptional bore accuracy and consistent Ra0.2 surface quality even under high-volume production.
06 Conclusion – Achieving Quality, Efficiency, and Lower Cost
In conclusion, achieving the right balance between quality, efficiency, and cost in automotive machining requires cutting tools that deliver precision and consistency under high-volume production demands. Aoshiji® Custom Tool’s PCD solutions are designed to provide long tool life, superior wear resistance, and cost-per-part reduction—helping manufacturers stay competitive in an increasingly demanding market. This case demonstrates how an automotive PCD reamer can significantly reduce cost-per-part while improving surface finish and tool life in demanding production environments.
